Battersea Power Station

Interspan is helping to breathe new life into an old coal-fired power station. The Battersea Power Station, in the London Borough of Wandsworth, is one of the world’s largest brick buildings and is notable for its Art Deco design. It was decommissioned in the 1970s and fell into a state of near ruin. However, a seven-phase, £8 billion (AU$14.5 billion) redevelopment project will see it emerge as one of the most innovative mixed-use neighbourhoods in the world, complete with residential units, shops, parks, restaurants and cultural spaces. The Battersea Power Station redevelopment is one of the largest and most complex building sites in Europe, while its non-uniform shapes added to the structural challenges. Byrne Group and Keltbray engaged Interspan to undertake post-tensioning works on Phases 1 and 3A respectively. Phase 1, completed in 2017, was designed by Simpson Haugh and is a mixed-use building of 18 floors over 327 metres. Interspan secured the project to help deliver the program. Foster + Partners designed Phase 3A, which will be built simultaneously with a new underground station. Interspan will deliver the design and construction of post-tension superstructure slab and beams as well as additional detailing work for the RC beams and upstands. Phase 3A will include a new ‘Electric Boulevard’ high street, 1300 apartments, a 160-room hotel, and 350,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and leisure space.
